Reflection:

This was an interesting introduction to the module. I used to enjoy photography as a hobby but this will be a good way to re-learn the basics and expand my knowledge and understanding of the medium. I enjoyed learning about the various equipment that is available in the photography studio and starting to understand how to use it. I am most looking forward to learning more about camera settings and how they work, as well as how they can be used in interesting ways.

Camera Basics Part 1

Exposure – the amount of light that reaches a camera’s sensor

Aperture – the size of the hole in the lens that light passes through

ISO – setting that adjusts how sensitive the camera is to the light reaching the camera’s sensor

Darkroom Practice:

In this lecture we learnt about the process of developing film in a darkroom. We were shown how a photo is passed through multiple chemicals in order to achieve a developed negative. We also scanned objects, as well as our hands, and then practiced developing the photos ourselves:

Assignment 1: Photograph Storytelling – Progress:

For my photography assignment, I have chosen to tell the story of a trip from suburbia into the city. The photographs will have a strong focus on lights of various colours, so they will therefore be taken at night. The photographs will be sequenced in a way that displays the narrative and the journey that the viewer goes on through the changing scenery.

I was inspired to explore the imagery of lights in the night by photographer Liam Wong, especially his book TO:KY:OO. While the subjects of my photos might differ from the vibrant cityscapes of Tokyo, the visuals of man-made lights breathing life into their otherwise dark surroundings is something I will draw inspiration from.

Assignment 3: Stop Motion – Progress:

For my stop motion project I chose to tell the story of a Rubik’s Cube sitting on a desk that decides to solve itself.
