Hayley Atwell Article – Professional Practice – W/C 13th November

From the perspective of a Musical Theatre Graduate, it was interesting to read the different opinions and outlooks on the entertainments industry within Hayley Atwell’s profile in the Guardian newspaper.

Personally, I feel like the following descriptions of her, mentioned by her Directors are what an actor must be to succeed within the industry:

  • She was always top at school. Spontaneous and surprising in what she would do. (This enhances the idea of being “in the moment” as we have been taught throughout the course!)
  • Sponteneity can lead to a clear sense of truth on stage. She is able to create believable character’s through her approach to acting.
  • Taking direction very easily. (As we are always told, a Director should only have to give a note once!)
  • A sense of a hard working personality can spread amongst fellow cast members and peers. If you get on well with those you work with, the work will be fun and enjoyable. I believe that acting is not only about your own portrayal of a character – your interaction with others on stage can determine how successful your performance is.
  • I believe it is important to be UNIQUE in everything you do! No one likes a copycat – be yourself and be remembered by the Director for who you are, not who you can impersonate.
  • No matter how talented you are, you may not be right for the part. It can often go down to looks at an audition, as was the case with Atwell! (She just happened to be right for it!)
  • From my perspective it is important to bring enthusiasm into all work you do! I’ve never heard of a half hearted actor!

What do I love about performing?

  • It’s your opportunity to shine! If the hard work is put in you’ll reap the rewards.
  • Engagement and interaction with the audience.
  • Feeling proud of the work you have achieved. (It’s like any other job, if you do it well you should be proud!)
  • I personally love working with groups of people to create something other’s will love. What better way than performing on stage!
  • I am very much a practical person and hence find the rehearsal process and performing a chance to improve these skills.

Why do I want to become a professional actor?

  • From a young age, I have always loved being entertained when going to the theatre. It’s great to be the person who makes the audience laugh or cry, all for the right reasons!
  • I love performing!
  • I have always been told to make the most of any talents you have. It just seems to click!

Why do I want to act as a profession rather than a hobby?

  • I am very much a practical person and hence find the rehearsal process and performing a chance to improve these skills. (Same as what I love about performing!)
  • Continue to enhance my skills and abilities within this area throughout a career.
  • Following a childhood dream! (From a young age I’ve always wanted to perform – cheesy I know!)
