Through listening to Denise Gough’s podcast on the joys and difficulties she has faced throughout her acting career, it emphasised to me the importance of enjoying the profession that you work in.
From listening to the podcast, I was able to note down these key points which I believe are accurate and will be helpful for my career:
- You may hit challenges and obstacles – overcome these and remain strong and professional!
- There is no point dwelling on a bad audition. Accept it and move on. There are plenty of other opportunities out there.
- Maintain good relationships! E.g. with Directors/Agents/Casting Directors etc. You never know, you might work with them again.
- It may not matter how talented you are. You could have the perfect voice (singing and spoken) however you need to look right for the part! It can often be simply down to what you look like.
- Don’t get into the mind-set of “Am I good enough?” (Negative attitude will never help!) Your as good as anyone else who is auditioning for that part! (This is what I always like to think!)
- In the words of Denise, don’t “Pour in the anxiety!” – Don’t scare yourself and enjoy the work you do. There are always positives and negatives to every job! Not just within the entertainments industry.
- Don’t limit yourself to “Just working in theatre” (Gough). Keep as many avenues open as physically possible. You never know what work will come up! I have always believed that the more strings you have to your bow, the better!
It is important to remember all of the above when working in the industry. As a young professional about to graduate next year, it is important to consider all of this. I need to consider my fears and aspirations and know what is right for me. What I might think is right, others won’t. Be yourself and be honest!
