Digital Sculpture – 3D Digital Modelling

digital sculpture uwl level 4

introduction to zbrush

ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that combines 3D/2.5D modeling, texturing and painting. It uses a proprietary “pixol” technology which stores lighting, color, material, orientation and depth information for the points making up all objects on the screen. The main difference between ZBrush and more traditional modeling packages is that it is more akin to traditional sculpting.

INVESTIGATION:

  • Introduction to anatomy

  • placement of the Zygomatic Arch’s

  • male and female superciliary arches

anatomy skull

The skull is a bone protective cavity for the brain. The skull is composed of four types of bone the cranial bones, facial bones, ear ossicles and hyoid bone.

two parts are more prominent are the cranium and the mandible, In humans these two parts are the neurocranium and the viscerocranium (facial skeleton) that includes the mandible as its largest bone. The skull forms the anterior-most portion of the skeleton and is a product of cephalisation—housing the brain, and several sensory structures such as the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, In humans these sensory structures are part of the facial skeleton.

Photoshop design EXAMPLE

in this task we looked at the structure and form of the human skull such as the placement of the Zygomatic Arch’s, we were given an exercise to label the human skull main features.

Photoshop design EXAMPLE

In this task we look at the difference e in a female skull to a male skull , the main differences are the gonial angle e.g. the angle of the jaw and the superciliary arches which for a male is a lot wider and prominate

  • ALAR CARTLIAGE

  • SEPTUM CARTLIAGE

  • NASAL BONE

  • ALAR FAT

  • SEPTUM

  • PHILTRUM

  • COLUMELLAR-LABIAL ANGLE

refences and inspiration

the nose is the fleshy protrusion located in the middle of the face that works as a principal part of the respiratory system, in addition to being the primary organ of smell. The human nose is composed of skin and other soft tissues, along with cartilages, and bones that extend from the skull

Nasal valve collapse or lateral nasal wall collapse refers to a loss of support for the tissues of the roof and side wall of the nose causing a collapse of the side wall when the patient breaths in through the nose. This can result from previous surgery or injury, can occur with advancing age or can be present with no obvious cause.

Photoshop design EXAMPLE

In this task we look at the nose and the main parts which have been labelled, learning about the anatomy to understand how the nose works to create a digital nose on zbrush , learning how the nose works considerably helps to design a nose.

zbrush model – anatomy nose

sculpturing the nose was hard at first but learning about how the nose works and what tissues and bone define the nose helped a lot, For me I found it easier to put slight definitions on the face to get the nose more correct and real

here is a video of the steps i took to create a nose using my fine art, realism and anatomy skills, together I was able to create a human nose using these techniques, this was my first attempt sculpting in ZBrush and the nose looked elegant and real

zbrush modelling – anatomy month

INVESTIGATION:

  • philtrum

  • modoilolus

  • marionette lines

  • nasolabial furrow

  • vermillion border of the labium

  • vermillion border of superioir labium

  • pillars of the month

  • Menatl crease

  • Mental protuberance

  • Orbicularis Oris

The lips come together to close the opening of the mouth, forming a line between the upper and lower lip creating a facial expression, a wide mouth can be quite attractive like the actress Julia Roberts has a wide mouth which People find attractive, people with a wide mouth usually have a very big smile and when we talk about a person’s mouth, we are usually talking about their lips and people convey their emotions and feelings through their mouth.

If someone is friendly and open, they will often have a full smile — this makes them look friendly.

But if someone is angry or hostile, they will show this in their mouth too — tight-lipped and firm.

Cosmetic facial plastic surgery is surgery meant to enhance visual appearance of the facial structures and features. Common procedures include facelifts, eye lifts, rhinoplasty, chin and cheek implants, liposuction, and procedures to correct facial wrinkles. ENT specialists are well trained to address all these problems.

Photoshop design EXAMPLE

In this task we look at the mouth and the main facial lines which have been labelled, learning about the anatomy of the mouth helps to understand how the mouth expressions change the face and using emotions in the smile can helps to design the month.

zbrush model – anatomy nose

sculpturing the mouth was easier than the nose , putting slight emotions into the mouth gave it a more real look where the nose had no emotional definitions so without the facial lines it would have been hard to achieve realism for the mouth, a slight lift in the lips gave a slight smile.

zbrush modelling – anatomy EYES

INVESTIGATION:

  • MEDIAL CANTHUS

  • LATERAL CANTHUS

  • PALPEBRAL FISSURE 9HEIGHT & LENGTH

  • INTERPUPILARY DISTANCE

  • SUPERIOR PALPEBRAL CREASE

  • INFERIOR PALPEBRAL CREASE

  • INFRAORBITAL FURROW

  • CARUNCLE

Eye function renders you the sense of sight. They convert light into electrical signals. Afterwards, the brain deciphers these electrical signals into images. Properly working healthy eyes are able to perform the following functions.

The main reason for needing glasses is literally down to the anatomy of your eyeball and how that changes as we grow and changes over time, which is why eyesight does tend to change. The other big reason for needing glasses is one that affects, well, nearly every single human in the world and that is the natural loss of focus for near vision.

Photoshop design EXAMPLE

this task we looked at the eyes and the main parts which have been labeled, learning about the anatomy of the eye helps to understand the structure of the eye and the fat and skin that protects the eye.

zbrush model – anatomy EYES

sculpturing the eyes were difficult without some facial features due to the defined tissues and bone structure so adding the nose helped a lot

The human ear consists of three parts—the outer earmiddle ear and inner ear. The ear canal of the outer ear is separated from the air-filled tympanic cavity of the middle ear by the eardrum. The middle ear contains the three small bones—the ossicles—involved in the transmission of sound, and is connected to the throat at the nasopharynx, via the pharyngeal opening of the Eustachian tube. The inner ear contains the otolith organs—the utricle and saccule—and the semicircular canals belonging to the vestibular system, as well as the cochlea of the auditory system.

Millions of people get their ears pierced, and most of them have no serious complications. Mild irritation and infections are common, however, for new piercings. In most cases, infections aren’t serious and clear up quickly.

The earlobes are fleshy and fatty, with strong blood flow. They heal quickly, reducing the risk of an earlobe infection. The upper ear is cartilage, a thick, stiff tissue with less blood flow.

Piercings in the upper ear are more likely to become infected, and infections in the upper ear are sometimes serious.

Photoshop design EXAMPLE

this task we looked at the ear and the main parts which have been labeled, learning about the anatomy of the ear helps to understand the ear and how it protects the ear drum and works like a speaker to narrow in sound and where it is coming from.

zbrush model – anatomy EARS

sculpturing ears was very hard with the amount of layers the ear is made of and the protection built into the ear to protect the ear drum.

here in this video are the steps I took to create the ear using anatomy skills, The ear took me longer than the previous tasks as I had to use a lot more brush techniques
