Bee decline caused by lack of food in London

Written by Lucy Fifield, Climate and Sustainability Reporter.

According to the World Bee Project, most individuals in London have started keeping bees due to responses to bee decline. It is believed we have enough bees in London, but we have a lack of food resources for all of the bees within the city. If there are too many bees within London, this will cause them to compete with other pollinators and wild bees for food, which may cause a decline.

Biodiversity is affected by the way we mismanage land. Agriculture in the last decade had the most significant impact on biodiversity, and there has been an increase of 300% of crops that require pollination; this means farming methods intensified.

If bees were extinct, we would face severe issues such as insufficient crop production, poor air quality and severe threats to ecosystem.

The World Bee Project in London uses artificial intelligence to understand bee health and local environments. Artificial intelligence is essential to generate new data, which allows us to understand more about bees’ habitats.
