MPs have blocked a proposal to grant leaseholders and tenants protection from being billed with fire safety work on their buildings.

The proposal was described as ‘unworkable’ by some ministers, who feared that it would lead to delays in improving building safety across the country.

Labour spokespeople have since declared that the conservative government have broken its promises, and that ‘blameless people’ would have to pay the price for the government’s carelessness.

The Fire Safety Bill was initially brought forward to further tighten housing safety regulations after the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, in which 72 people died.

We spoke to Dave Richards, Organiser of the London Cladding Action Group, about the group’s thoughts on the bill being blocked.
