Ealing council has launched a recovery plan to ‘help and support the hardest hit borough’ in West London. Many people in the area have lost their jobs during the pandemic and many businesses have struggled due to strains caused by multiple lockdowns.

The borough of Ealing was one of the hardest hit boroughs in west London with its workforce earning less than the London living wage. The councillor cabinet member for decent living incomes, Councillor Bassam Mahfouz said, ‘We want to generate good jobs for local people, ending zero-hour contacts and securing good terms and conditions for workers.’

The local council’s plan revolves around providing residents with access to new skills based courses. There are a wide range of programs available such as business administration, social care, English and many others. This new strategy comes as the Government has cut Universal credit by £20 a week. The council believes in the long term that this will help residents find good paying jobs.

Since May the council has ‘helped more than 500 out – of work residents to find work’ said Councillor Mahfouz. Last year they ran more than 350 courses and workshops reaching 2690 people.
