Yiddish Accent… Oh Drat (The Cat)

First Audition for my final year shows at LCM could have gone worse but could have most definitely gone better!

My chosen 16 bar excerpts were ‘The Surrey with a Fringe on Top” from Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘She Touched Me’ from Schafer & Levin’s ‘Drat the Cat’. All went well with the first piece other than my lyric faux pas that suggested that my surrey had windows rather than curtains, which did not get past Stuart Pedlar’s keen eye (or ear) for detail. It was my second performance that will have most definitely made an impact whether it be good or bad! I first sang ‘She Touched Me’ as rehearsed in a soft General American Accent which went seemingly well, however my later renditions in a “Yiddish” accent as proposed by Phil Cornwell did not go so well. Let’s just say that my Yiddish accent appears to come in two forms: Even more American than the first time round or plain and broad Yorkshire.

God only knows what they were thinking when I left the room but I went in there, didn’t put on a facade and gave them a true version of myself. I tried my best and surely that’s all any of us can do.

  1. I like how you’ve embraced Campus Press to really make it something to look at. Well done.

    You did what was asked of you, which is the main thing. We have to be willing to try anything. Often the redirect is more about whether you can take direction rather than whether you can actually do what is asked of you. So don’t sweat it. You gave it a try, you were able to laugh at yourself. You showed you are up for trying something and you have a sense of humour; these are vital skills for any rehearsal room.
