Visual Narrative

Introduction to Camerawork:

Week one:

Greta Khushnuma – The red light highlights her rosy cheeks and the cheeks match with her pink jumper. I took the picture when she was laughing to capture her genuine and raw emotions. The lighting reflects her T-zone which makes her look flushed which makes her expressions more beautiful.

I took pictures of Greta and Khushnuma. I tried to capture them at raw moments so I can highlight their natural expressions; natural expressions are hard to replicate when posing for a picture so from this session. I learnt that it is important for the photographer to create an inviting atmosphere for models so they can express themselves genuinely.

Being the photographer, as well as behind the camera made me aware of the thought that is put behind every picture. You learn about how different angles suit different people; noticing specific and unique expressions people make; becoming aware of people’s style and body language. When taking pictures or having your picture taken, it’s important to not just engage with the camera but the entire atmosphere. Otherwise the picture feels fabricated and the dynamic beauty of the photo can get lost.
