Week 01

The Role I would Like to do:  VFX Supervisor/ Generalist

My ultimate goal is to start my own studio, but to get there, I need to gain a solid amount of experience, knowledge, and skills. Therefore, I want to choose a career path that will allow me to learn the ins and outs of the VFX pipeline. By working as a VFX Generalist, I can build a strong technical skill set, and as a VFX Supervisor, I can gain valuable on-set experience.

VFX Supervisor

A VFX Supervisor oversees the entire VFX process on a project, managing the VFX pipeline and leading the team of artists. They collaborate with directors and producers from the early stages of preproduction to decide on the necessary VFX for each shot. They also guide the creation of prototype materials like concept art and CG images, which help establish the style of the VFX. During production, they ensure that shots are ready for VFX and monitor their quality. In post-production, they continue to lead the team, ensuring the VFX align with the director’s vision. This role can span up to two years depending on the project size.

Entry Level

Environment Artist

Working as an Environment Artist provides a solid foundation in the VFX pipeline, allowing me to build expertise in 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering. This role helps me to develop a strong technical skill set, which is essential as  moving forward in my career. To progress toward becoming a VFX Generalist, I can expand my knowledge by learning other VFX disciplines, such as compositing and simulation. Gaining experience across the entire VFX pipeline will allow me to take on broader responsibilities and develop the versatility required for a Generalist role. Hopefully, my growth as an Environment Artist will provide the necessary skills and experience to transition into a VFX Generalist and, eventually, a VFX Supervisor.

For my major project, I am integrating three core elements of the VFX industry: simulation in Houdini, environment creation in Unreal Engine, and compositing in Nuke. To enhance my workflow and gain valuable insights, I am reaching out to expert artists in each of these fields.
