VFX Industry Career Map

The Role Would Like To Do

The role I would like to do is VFX Generalist. But to start with entry-level, I would like to go with an environment artist. As it includes 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and composition to create immersive worlds for games, films, or simulations.

My end goal is to start my own company. But to achieve that goal, I need to gain good industry experience. So my interest is to be a VFX supervisor. And to achieve that, I have started with the environment artist.

When real-world filming isn’t feasible, environment artists produce computer-generated backgrounds for movies, video games, and simulations. These environments can be anything from destroyed cities to galaxies and celestial landscapes.

They create environments from concept art, photos, or sketches using 3D modeling and sculpting software. A wireframe, or mesh, is the first step in the process and is then shaped and improved for realism. Before sending the environment for lighting and texturing, they shape elements with digital brushes and graphics tablets.

Environment artists can be found working as independent contractors or at VFX and game studios. In smaller firms, they might work as general 3D artists, combining modeling, texturing, and environment construction.

Skills Required:

  • Be good at drawing.
  • Have a strong understanding of form, color, texture, and light.
  • Know how these elements work together to create realistic environments.
  • Knowledge of Environments:
  • Understand architecture and how structures are designed.
  • Have good awareness of city spaces, landscapes, and natural environments.
  • Knowledge of 3D Modeling Programs:
  • Be adept at using Blender, Maya, and ZBrush.
  • Continuously learn new ways to fix problems in your environments.
  • Work effectively with other VFX artists in the pipeline.
  • Use shared resources and contribute to the team’s workflow.
  • Work within the production schedule and stay on track.
  • Manage files properly with naming conventions and version control.
  • Meet deadlines and maintain a strong work ethic.

There are a few different entry levels as well, which I would like to look into.
