Week 1:

CGI is for losers – icebreaker

I believe when people say, “CGI is for losers,” they’re referring to filmmakers who use computer generated imagery as an easy shortcut instead of real, practical effects. Some people believe that overusing VFX can sometimes make a movie seem less authentic or lower quality, and practical effects usually show more effort and skill to the audience. However, it’s important to remember that VFX is also an art form and not just a simple tool for filmmakers to take shortcuts. Comments like this may give the audience a negative impression about CGI and that movies that do have CGI aren’t as good as movies that don’t have CGI. I believe claims like this hurt VFX as an art form because it is reinforcing the idea that VFX is just for filmmakers to take shortcuts.

If this were an essay question, how would you format it?

To what extent does the use of CGI versus practical effects impact the quality and storytelling of a film?

Deepfake:

A video, image, etc. in which a person’s face, body, or voice has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else.

Ethical:

It’s only okay to use someone’s face or voice with AI if they’ve said it’s fine and you’re being honest about it. It’s not right to use it to trick people, invade someone’s privacy, or mess with their reputation. If the person agrees and it’s clear that it was made with AI, then it’s usually alright. But if it confuses or hurts people, then it’s not okay.

This video specifically is okay because it is revealed that it was all fake at the end.
