Data Management

First you may want to think about the format of your storage device be it a memory stick or external portable hard drive.

Apple Macs use either HFS+ or APFS format. You cannot read and write data to these formats on a PC.

Windows based PCs use NTFS format. You can read from this format on a Mac but not write to it.

eXfat is a format that works on both Mac and PC.

To format your Memory Stick or hard drive on a Mac open “Disk Utility”

Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility

Select your drive or memory stick in the left panel list and then select “erase” choose the format you require from the drop down menu.

If unsure ask a technician for help.

Types of External Storage Drives

USB Sticks

For smaller basic files, word docs, smaller projects etc

Portable Disk Drives

For larger projects requiring more space than is typical on a memory stick.

Note. You will need a fast hard disk to be able to work directly from it if you are editing Video or audio.

Memory cards – Flash, SD, etc.

Memory cards are not really meant for general data storage. If the card has been used in a video camera DO NOT open the memory card and change or copy data within it! Use an application like Final Cut Pro X/Media encoder to “ingest” or make a copy of the data.
