Health and Safety Information
Each area of the school has specific Health and Safety restrictions, please make sure you attend the inductions (see opposite) which usually run at the start of the year as part of your course as without this you will not be able to use the facilities.
It is important to understand that while we take every precaution for the health, safety and wellbeing of the people in the university it is also your responsibility to be part of this and to act appropriately while in attendance and report anything that concerns you.
Report any and all health and safety concerns you have to a member of staff. We will then do our upmost to resolve any issue.
If you are working away from the university you are still responsible for your actions; we ask you to fill in a risk assessment (see the section ‘How to complete a risk assessment’) form each time you are working on and off site, this way we can help you reduce any potential hazards.
There are some local rules that must also be followed
- Ladders – are only available for trained members of staff to use as it is working at height.
- Food and drink cannot be taken into technical areas, except bottled water. However the technician in charge of the area you are in may ask you not to drink at the workstation. An exception to this would be the TV/VFX studio and the control room there is a no food or drink at all policy due to the nature of the rooms.
Please obey all instructions from the technician. Whether you feel it necessary or not, you must comply with their requests, please.
At the end of this handbook you will find the ‘Code of Conduct’ section, here you will find detailed information on how to work within our technical areas
First aiders
We have a number of first aiders on hand to help if there is a problem. However, if you or a colleague needs help, in the first instance please use a phone in the corridor to call the University emergency line, extension 3333 or if you have your phone 020 8231 3333.
Fire
If you discover a fire, raise the alarm by activating one of the fire alarm buttons (information on where the fire alarm button is will be given to you in your inductions).
Then leave calmly and carefully, closing all doors behind you and leaving your bags etc. (personal items are replaceable, persons are not!).
As you are leaving via the escape routes, let a fire marshal know where the fire is and what you have seen.
Do not attempt to tackle the fire or return to the site of the fire yourself.
If there is any emergency…
Call the University emergency line, extension 3333 or if you have your phone 020 8231 3333.
