Call for papers (closes on 2nd May 2023) 

 

We invite you to submit contributions to this year’s Festival of Learning and Teaching from individual academic and professional staff, and/or students. We would like to hear from colleagues, whether they are novice or seasoned presenters.  

The Festival will be held face-to-face again at St. Mary’s Road Campus Ealing, so all contributions have to be made in person on the day of the event, 6th July 2023. 

Theme: ‘Effective Assessment for Learner Success’ 

This year’s conference will focus on best practice in relation to developing assessment and providing feedback to enhance student learning and the student experience. It will provide a space to discuss current challenges, share best practice and celebrate the innovations and achievements in relation to the following sub-themes:

1. Innovations in assessment types; this may include but is not limited to: 

  1. Authentic assessment 
  2. Gamified learning 
  3. Groupwork assessment 
  4. Portfolio assessment 
  5. Problem based assessment 
  6. Project based assessment 
  7. Work based assessment
    (e.g. apprenticeships) 
  8. Assessing large cohorts 
  9. Flexible assessments 
  10. Designing AI proof assessments 

2. Assessment design for learner success; this may include but is not limited to:

  1. Programme level assessment 
  2. Addressing challenges of continuation and first submission rates  
  3. Timing of assessment 
  4. Assessment for and of learning 
  5. Assessment mapping 
  6. Continuous assessment 
  7. Work-integrated learning
    (e.g apprenticeships) 

3. Integrating digital tools and technologies for assessment; this may include but is not limited to :

  1. Technology-enhanced peer assessment 
  2. Simulation, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality and Extended Reality 
  3. Audio/video feedback
  4. Overcoming barriers to technology-based assessment 
  5. Formative assessment tools Personalised assessment 

4. Assessment: learning communities, social justice, diversity and well-being; this may include but is not limited to:

  1. Developing academic integrity and academic literacies through assessment  
  2. Partnership in assessment and feedback (student voice) 
  3. Student engagement in assessment 
  4. Inclusive assessment methods 
  5. Equitable access to quality assessment 
  6. Alternative assessment 
  7. Helping students understand feedback practices 
  8. Using plagiarism detection tools to teach academic integrity 
  9. Self-assessment 
  10. Peer-to-peer assessment 
  11. International perspectives in assessment and feedback practice 

 

We welcome abstract submissions (no more than 300 words) for  

  • Presentations of a paper (10 mins) + 10 mins Q&A 
  • Workshops (30 mins) 
  • Posters (These will be exhibited and available for viewing by all participants on the day)
